Announcing Mu Soeng’s New Book: Revoicing the Buddha

We are delighted to share that Mu Soeng, former Director of Studies at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies, has published a new book: Revoicing the Buddha. Mu Soeng, who was ordained in the Korean Zen tradition and served as a monk for 11 years, has long been a cherished teacher and scholar within the BCBS community. His previous works, including The Heart of the Universe and Trust in Mind, have deeply influenced many on the path of Buddhist study and practice.

In Revoicing the Buddha, Mu Soeng invites readers to explore how the Buddha’s timeless wisdom resonates with the complexities of the 21st century. This book is not an attempt to promote a specific Buddhist ideology but rather an exploration of how the Buddha’s voice might be heard today. Mu Soeng reflects on how the Buddha’s teachings have been reinterpreted across cultures and time, emphasizing the dynamic, living nature of the dharma.

Drawing from early texts and contemporary insights, Mu Soeng examines how the Buddha’s core message—the crafting of a noble person and a community of noble persons—can address modern existential crises. Revoicing the Buddha explores how the Buddha might speak in today’s vernacular, responding to the heightened stress and complexities of modern life while pointing to the enduring relevance of mindfulness, compassion, and self-inquiry.

The book offers reworded sutras that bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary language, inviting readers into a personal, transformative dialogue with the teachings. Rather than presenting fixed doctrines, Mu Soeng encourages self-exploration, allowing the dharma to act as a “turning word” that inspires insight and growth.
